Introduction to Andrew Wright

My name is Andrew Wright, and I am a Junior Petroleum Engineering student at the University of Oklahoma. I am from Austin, Texas. My current career goal is to have a job, despite the current crude oil prices.

One of my favorite classes thus far has been Petroleum Economics. I really enjoyed learning about how the non-technical side of the oil and gas industry works, and why Petroleum Engineers make some of the decisions that they do. Our professor, Dr. Moghanloo, also worked very hard to make sure we understood what it meant to be an ethical engineer, and how to make decisions in that mindset that are beneficial to our company, local communities, the environment, and ourselves. That is one of the many reasons that I believe this class will have a lasting impact on my future career.

My greatest academic accomplishment thus far is earning the highest grade in my class on the Reservoir Rock Properties lab reports. My team members and I worked for many hours every week to ensure the lab reports were completed on time, and to our high standards. It was a very satisfying feeling to be rewarded for the hard effort my group and I made in the class.

My family has a corgi, named Satchel, who lives back at home. He can be fun to hang out with, but a little needy at times.

A picture of Satchel, taken by myself.

My favorite place to visit is Destin, Florida. Check out a picture I posted in here.

My favorite TV show is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I have been watching it for years, and I still find it to be the funniest sitcom on TV.

My favorite food is breakfast tacos from the Texas Honey Ham Company, pictured below. I usually order a bacon egg and cheese ranchero.

  1. Andrew, I think it is so awesome that you love Dr. Moghanloo as well! He is hands down one of my favorite professors from last year. I'm excited to have him again in another course, I think he is teaching one of the Reservoir Engineering II courses.

In response to your comment on my posts, you shou8ld give golf definitely another try. It takes great patience and no one has ever succeeded at it on their first try. Have a good day!

  2. Hey Tyler!

Appreciate what you said about my storytelling post, I had a lot of fun writing it!

And I love the slo mo guys too. I had not seen that video. Wow. I've seen underwater bullets on mythbusters but seeing it in HD slow motion was something else entirely.

Always Sunny is also one of my favorite shows, though I'm a little torn about it. Part of me just wants them to end it already; it's gone on long enough in my opinion. But at the same time I laugh at every episode so I can't complain! (though I do find the newer ones to be less funny than the classics) My favorite episode--this is a hard one-- is probably the Nightman Cometh. Or Mac is a Serial Killer. What about yours?

  3. Hi Andrew,

I hope all is well. Were you born and raised in Austin? My best friend used to live there when she was younger, and we took a road trip down there a few summers back, and it was awesome and different. We didn’t have enough time to see everything that Austin offers, but I enjoyed the culture, street art, and the people. I plan to go back for another visit. It was not what I expected at all, and completely different from San Antonio, which is one of the cities I lived in. Thank you for the comment in the storytelling. I really appreciated it. I hope you have a great semester and good luck with your future endeavors!

  4. Hey, Andrew, I am from Austin too! That is where I was born and I lived there until third grade; we moved away then, and we lived in lots of places, but when my dad retired, he moved back there to Austin so I get to go see him there. Geez, Austin is HUGE compared to when I grew up there as a little kid in the 1960s. But it is definitely fun to go visit.

And your Satchel is such a cutie! I keep telling all the people in class who have lovely dogs to make some great dog memes to go with all the cat memes I have in the announcements. You can make memes at Cheezburger.com with pictures of your own pets; it's super-easy. Dangerously fun.

And thanks for sharing that video... very cool! Of course I had to look at some of the other ones: match heads! Wow!!! The god of fire, Agni, would definitely like that one. You'll be seeing Agni here and there in the epics: Wikipedia: Agni (Sanskrit and English are related languages, so Agni is related to all the igni- words in English, like ignite!)

  5. Hey Andrew, it is very nice to meet you. I just finished the last season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and I thought it was very well done. I admit it took me some time to get used to the style of the show, but it's a clever comedy.
Also, I think it's neat that you enjoyed Petroleum Economics. One reason I love economics is that there are so many different applications that I never imagined possible before I started studying. Good luck with your future goals and career plans, I look forward to reading more of your posts later.

  6. Hello Andrew! It is so nice to meet a fellow petroleum engineering major in this class! Good luck on the job search – don’t give up hope!! I took Project Evaluation (it is kind of like petroleum econ) with Jamili – and I really enjoyed it. At my internship last summer, I had the opportunity to do a little bit of everything with the company, but one of my favorite parts was making sure the economics on current and future projects were good. Also, WAY TO GO in Rock Props! That was a very challenging course, but it really prepares you for the higher level courses. I look forward to getting to read your stories!

  7. Hi Andrew! It as great reading your introduction and knowing a little about you. I have travelled to some parts of Texas but have never been to Austin. I have heard its a huge place and would love to visit someday. My roommate is Petroleum engineering too and she is nervous about finding a job. It is great to see that you have put that as your career goal as I think having set a goal is a great way to succeed. I wish you good luck for future I am sure you will do great!

  8. Hey Andrew, it is nice to meet you! One of my favorite foods is breakfast tacos so I am adding the Texas Honey Ham Company to my list. Also, I was in Professor Moghanloo’s Economics course and I too found this course to be very difficult but also informational. His intelligence in the course was amazing and I couldn’t imagine a better professor for this course. I am hoping to have him again. Thanks for reading!

  9. Hi Andrew! It is nice to meet you. It is funny that you are a petroleum engineer because I feel like I have seen a lot of those in this class. It seems like your Reservoir Rock Properties group really put in the hours to get the highest grade. Congrats on that! Anyways, I love the picture of your dog. I think corgis are adorable.

Looking forward to reading your blog!

  10. Hi Andrew,

There are so many Engineers in this course! Petroleum is a rough field to be in right now, I hope things pick back up in that industry. I am an Aerospace Engineer and I am absolutely loving it.
Junior Year is rough (I bet this class is a relief from you course work like it is mine!)

I like how this semester and last we are actually getting into real classes!

    Good Luck!

  11. Hi Andrew,

My sister's family has a corgi too and it is the fattest, laziest dog ever, but I love her. I'm also hoping that the oil prices go up because I'm waiting to hear back from some oil and gas companies for a job. Fingers crossed. Anyway, nice to meet you and I hope you have a great semester and can finish out strong in your degree.

  12. Hi Andrew!

I love Destin Florida as well! It is such a beautiful and fun place. I've never owned a Corgi, but I hear a lot of great things about them. I'm glad that you are still pursuing your degree even though you might face some challenges! Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  13. Hi Andrew!
You sure picked tough curriculum when you chose your degree path! I have some friends in the program and they are so busy with classes! It sounds like it is something you really like and are good at!

I have never been to Destin, but I look forward to it someday. The photo you shared sure makes it look inviting! Your dog is too cute. I have not ever watched your favorite tv show, I don't know how I have missed it. I love watching sitcoms. I look forward to finding it and binge watch it someday soon.

  14. Hey Andrew! It's nice to virtually meet you!
Wow! All I've heard about Petroleum Engineering is that there are some hard classes. It's great that you enjoy it so much. That probably makes the difficult classes seem less tedious.
Your dog is SO cute! Corgis are probably my favorite breed. I love the short little legs!
I've watched a few episodes of It's Always Sunny, but I never really stuck with it! If you like that show, I'm sure you'll love The Office!

  15. Nice to meet you Andrew!
I have lost count of the petroleum engineers in this class. I am one as well, but a senior (my last semester, woot!). You are correct in believing Dr. Moghanloo's class would have a lasting impact. Variables imparted to you via petroleum economics will come in more handy in the business side of it than almost all of your petroleum classes.
    Until next time!

  16. Hi Andrew,
It is always nice to see another Engineer. I am Computer Science Engineer, but I have heard from friends that Petroleum Engineering is a tough major. However, it is nice that you are enjoying the courses you are taking and good luck with that. It was nice getting to know you a little. Looking forward to read your blogs.

  17. Hi Andrew,

It is nice to meet you. I am also from Texas, but I have never made it down to Austin. The state is just so big! It seems like there are a lot of engineers in this class. Congratulations on the Reservoir Rock Properties grade! It is always nice to have your hard work rewarded. I hope the rest of the semester goes well for you.

  18. Hi Andrew,

It's nice to meet you via your blog in this class. I hope your current career goals come true. It kinda sucks with Oklahoma's economy, but I wish well for you. I am surprised with how many engineers there are in this class. Those tacos sound amazing and I'll have to try them sometime. Good luck with the rest of this semester!

  19. Hello Andrew!

So nice to "meet" you! I have some friends from Austin, it seems like a really awesome place to live - I have only visited a few times but I have always had fun! I also have a lot of friends who are attempting to go into the oil field. I know it well as my dad is an oil analyst... It is my hope for you that the oil economy can pick back up when you are looking for a job!

  20. Hi again Andrew,
Oil and gas prices still haven't increased too much, but at least they have increased some! I ended up getting hired on by an oil and gas company, so we will see how that goes! Fingers crossed! I hope you had a great semester and good luck finding a job! (if you haven't already found one)

  21. Hi Andrew, I am surprised that I have not commented on your introduction. You are probably the only person I have not made a comment on their introduction this semester. That’s cool that you are from Austin, it is one of my favorites cities in Texas besides Houston, which is where I am from. Good luck in your career in Petroleum Engineering, it seems like you are doing so good in school. It was nice to read more about you and good luck again.
